Your Child’s First Step Learning How to Read
Your child must learn the alphabet as that first step in learning to read because it forms the foundation for everything that follows. Each letter represents a unique sound, and recognizing these letters and their sounds is how children begin to decode words. By understanding the alphabet, children can start to make the connection between written language and spoken language. Undoubtedly, the alphabet is truly where it all begins, setting children up for success in their reading journey.
You can help your child learn the alphabet by:
- Singing the ABCs: Songs help make learning fun and memorable. Sing the alphabet together to help your child recognize letters in sequence.
- Using Alphabet Flashcards: Show your child a letter and say its sound. Let them repeat it back to build letter-sound recognition.
- Playing Alphabet Games: Play simple games like matching letters to objects that start with that letter (e.g., A for apple) to connect letters with sounds.
- Reading Alphabet Books: Interactive books that focus on letters help reinforce what your child is learning while keeping them engaged.
A Good Start: Learn the Alphabet Books
Learn the Alphabet Books with Interactive Cards and Games is the first steps that you and your child will take on their reading journey. This section of the program includes two downloadable books that come complete with teaching instructions, making it easy for parents to guide their child through each step. In Book A, Learning Letter Names, you’ll teach your child to verbally identify all of the letters of the alphabet, both upper and lower case. These letters need to be able to be identified fluently as well as in and out of sequence. In Book B, Learning More About The Alphabet, you will teach beginning readers about the sound each letter of the alphabet makes through the use of memorable graphics.
